Gartly Advisory

Gartly Advisory prepares annual SMSF financial statements and lodges the fund’s annual return. Its site says an independent, ASIC-registered auditor must audit the fund each year, and Gartly coordinates that audit for trustees. Geoff Gartly is listed by CA ANZ as an SMSF Specialist, and Patricia Chan, who has a superannuation background, works on superannuation and client support. Trustees switching from another accountant can leave the changeover to the firm, which collects the prior year’s accounts and audit report. It also helps people establishing a fund, and Geoff Gartly’s work includes SMSF exits.

The firm states that it does not audit SMSFs. It also does not advise on whether to set up a fund, because that is financial product advice, but it gives factual information on SMSF tax and compliance and can work alongside a licensed adviser. Both directors are CPAs, and meetings are held online or at the Moorabbin or Chadstone offices.

Each year it prepares the financial statements and lodges the fund’s income tax return. The firm is also a registered SMSF auditor, but its site says the independence rules stop a firm auditing a fund whose accounts it prepared, so for those funds it arranges an independent approved auditor. Founder Kennedy Weldemariam is a registered tax agent, and the Footscray office opens on Saturdays.

Choosing an SMSF Accountant in Melbourne

Running a self-managed super fund makes the trustees answerable for its records, accounts and tax. Every year the fund needs financial statements and member statements, an independent audit, and an SMSF annual return lodged with the ATO. Most Melbourne trustees pay an SMSF accountant to run that cycle for them.

The audit has to be done by an approved SMSF auditor registered with ASIC who is independent of the fund. The ATO asks trustees to appoint the auditor no later than 45 days before the annual return is due, and the return can only be lodged once the audit is finished. We left out firms whose sites suggest they audit funds they also prepare.

Each firm below shows SMSF work on its own website, such as setting up a fund and preparing its annual accounts and return. Some also advise on property and borrowing in super, pensions or moving a fund from another accountant. Ask each firm how it handles the audit before you move your fund.

Common Questions About Melbourne SMSF Accountants

8Melbourne SMSF Accountants compared
4.91Average Google rating
What does an SMSF accountant do each year?

An SMSF accountant keeps the fund’s records up to date, prepares its financial statements and member statements, works out the fund’s tax, lodges the SMSF annual return and gets the fund ready for its independent audit. Many also help set up new funds, start pensions, track contributions against the caps and keep the investment strategy under review.

Who audits my SMSF?

An approved SMSF auditor registered with ASIC, who must be independent of the fund. The ATO asks trustees to appoint the auditor no later than 45 days before the annual return is due. You can check an auditor’s registration on ASIC’s SMSF auditor register, and the auditor’s number goes on the fund’s annual return.

Does my fund need an audit in a year when nothing happened?

Yes. The ATO says every SMSF must be audited each year, even when no contributions or payments were made. The audit must be finished before the annual return is lodged, because the return uses details from the auditor’s signed report.

Can my accountant tell me whether to start an SMSF?

Advice on whether to set up an SMSF, or which investments it should hold, is financial product advice, which needs an Australian financial services licence. Some firms on this list hold one or have licensed advisers in their group, while others give factual information and work with your adviser. Ask each firm what it can advise on.

Can I move my SMSF to a new accountant?

Yes. The new accountant will usually ask for the fund’s last financial statements, the most recent audit report, the trust deed and the investment strategy, and will contact your previous accountant for anything missing. Moving after one year’s return is lodged and before the next year’s work starts keeps the handover simple.

How did you choose these Melbourne SMSF accountants?

Each firm’s own website describes SMSF accounting work, and each is a registered tax agent with a principal in CA ANZ, CPA Australia or the IPA, an office in greater Melbourne and a Google rating of 4.5 or more from at least 20 reviews. We did not list firms whose sites suggest they audit funds they prepare. Places on this list are never paid for.
