Getting Your Tax Return Done in Melbourne

A Melbourne tax return gets harder once life adds a rental property, a share or crypto sale, income from overseas or a side business with an ABN. Those are the returns where a tax accountant tends to earn their fee, by getting the extra schedules right and checking that each deduction has records behind it.

Timing matters as well. People who lodge for themselves usually have until 31 October, but the ATO gives later dates to clients a registered tax agent has taken on before that day, provided earlier years are not overdue. If you missed 31 October 2026, an agent can still lodge for you, although late returns can attract penalties.

The firms below prepare individual returns from offices across Melbourne, from Footscray, Essendon and Mickleham in the west and north to Noble Park, Moorabbin and Nunawading in the south-east and east, plus several in the CBD. Some serve clients in languages other than English, and some offer evening, Saturday or video appointments. Each write-up sticks to the work the firm describes on its own site.

Common Questions About Melbourne Tax Accountants

10Melbourne Tax Accountants compared
4.94Average Google rating
Do I need a tax accountant if I only earn a wage?

Not always. Many people with one job and a few work expenses lodge through myTax. An accountant is more useful when you have a rental property, shares or crypto to sell, overseas income, an ABN on the side or a debt with the ATO, or when you want someone to check your deductions are allowed.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Bring photo ID, your myGov details or permission for the accountant to download your ATO pre-fill, payment summaries, work expense receipts, private health insurance details and any ATO letters. Landlords should add the rental statements, loan interest figures and any depreciation schedule, and investors should add buy and sell records for shares and crypto.

Can an accountant lodge returns I missed in earlier years?

Yes. A registered tax agent can prepare and lodge returns for past years and deal with the ATO about any penalties or debt. The ATO usually only gives the later agent due date for this year’s return if your overdue returns are lodged by 31 October, so it helps to clear the old years first.

What is the difference between a tax agent and a BAS agent?

A registered tax agent can charge to prepare and lodge income tax returns and give tax advice. A registered BAS agent covers a narrower set of services, such as BAS, GST and payroll reporting, and cannot prepare or lodge an income tax return for a fee. For a personal return, you need a tax agent.

How do I know a tax accountant is legitimate?

Look them up on the Tax Practitioners Board register at tpb.gov.au before you hand over any personal details. According to the TPB, charging a fee to lodge someone’s income tax return is limited to registered tax agents. Be careful with anyone who promises a refund before seeing your records or wants your refund paid into their account.

How did you choose these Melbourne tax accountants?

Every firm prepares individual tax returns according to its own website, is a registered tax agent on the TPB register, has a principal who belongs to CA ANZ, CPA Australia or the IPA, has an office in greater Melbourne and holds a Google rating of 4.5 or more from at least 20 reviews. No firm pays to be listed.
