OzLedger

OzLedger sets up SMSFs from the trust deed and trustee structure through to the fund’s ABN, TFN and ATO registration, then prepares the annual financial statements, member statements and SMSF annual return. It monitors contribution caps during the year, documents and reviews the investment strategy, and handles pension commencement, minimum drawdowns and transfer balance reporting. Each year it coordinates with the fund’s independent auditor, preparing the audit file and answering queries, and its site says it does not carry out the audit itself. Founder Sri Pathmanathan is a Chartered Accountant.

Sydney Tax & Accountancy Services

Sydney Tax & Accountancy Services runs SMSF setup online: trustees complete a form through a secure portal and sign the trust deed electronically, and the firm applies for the fund’s TFN and ABN, submits the cash management account application once the ATO approves the fund and sends rollovers through SuperStream. After setup it helps with reporting, tax returns and investment compliance, and it guides trustees through ATO rules on buying residential or commercial property in a fund. Principal Surendra Gauchan CPA describes himself as an SMSF Specialist Advisor.

Clarity Tax Consulting

Clarity Tax Consulting establishes and administers SMSFs, prepares their annual accounts and tax returns, and coordinates the audit. Its tax dispute background shows in its SMSF work, as it prepares private ruling applications on SMSF issues, including matters involving foreign superannuation funds. Director Jessica Jiang is a CPA and Chartered Tax Adviser whose 20 years of tax experience include private rulings and objections. That suits trustees with an unusual question for the ATO or money coming from an overseas super fund. Meetings are held at its Bond Street office.

At audit time the firm prepares the fund and liaises with independent auditors. Given its long focus on property investors, it also gives guidance on property investment within a fund, along with strategy reviews and contribution planning. Trustees who want broader help can use the firm’s wealth and financial planning and finance and loans services. Its Sydney office is in Pymble.

Because the Toongabbie firm also handles personal and business tax, trustees can keep their fund, household returns and business with one practice. Choosing an SMSF Accountant in Sydney

Running a self-managed super fund means the trustees, not a big fund, are responsible for its paperwork. Every year the fund needs financial statements and member statements, an SMSF annual return lodged with the ATO and an independent audit completed first. Many Sydney trustees pay an SMSF accountant to handle most of that and to keep track of contribution caps and pension payments.

The audit has to be done by an approved SMSF auditor registered with ASIC who is independent of the fund, so the accountant who prepares the accounts should not audit them. The ATO asks trustees to appoint the auditor no later than 45 days before the annual return is due, and the return cannot be lodged until the audit is finished.

Each firm on this page says on its own website that it does SMSF accounting work, such as setting up funds, preparing the annual accounts and return, and handling ongoing administration. Some also guide trustees on property in a fund, borrowing arrangements and pensions. Before you sign up, ask how the firm arranges the audit and who will prepare your fund’s accounts each year.

Common Questions About Sydney SMSF Accountants

8Sydney SMSF Accountants compared
4.97Average Google rating
What does an SMSF accountant do each year?

An SMSF accountant keeps the fund’s records up to date, prepares its financial statements and member statements, works out the fund’s tax, lodges the SMSF annual return and arranges for an independent auditor. Many also set up new funds, track contribution caps, start pensions and report events such as pension commencements to the ATO.

Why can’t the accountant who prepares my SMSF accounts also audit it?

The law requires each SMSF to be audited every year by an approved SMSF auditor registered with ASIC, and that auditor must be independent of the fund and its trustees. An accountant who prepares the fund’s accounts should not audit them, so expect your accountant to arrange an outside auditor. You can look up an auditor on ASIC’s register.

When does my SMSF auditor need to be appointed?

The ATO says trustees must appoint an approved SMSF auditor no later than 45 days before the fund’s annual return is due. The audit must be finished before the return is lodged, and it is needed every year, even if the fund received no contributions and made no payments.

Can my SMSF buy property in Sydney?

It can, if the trust deed and investment strategy allow it and the purchase meets the sole purpose test of providing retirement benefits. A fund can buy business real property and lease it to a member’s business at market rent, but it generally cannot buy a home for members or their relatives to live in or rent. Get licensed advice before buying.

Can an SMSF accountant tell me what to invest in?

Usually not. An accountant can handle the fund’s tax, accounts and compliance, but recommending whether to start an SMSF or which investments to buy is financial product advice, which requires an Australian financial services licence. Ask each firm what it is licensed to advise on and whether it works with a licensed adviser.

How did you choose these Sydney SMSF accountants?

Each firm’s own website describes SMSF accounting work, and we left out firms whose sites say they audit SMSFs themselves. All of them are registered tax agents led by a CA ANZ, CPA Australia or IPA member, work from a Sydney office and hold at least 4.5 stars from 20 or more Google reviews. No firm pays for its place.
