Choosing an SMSF Accountant in Perth

Trustees of a self-managed super fund carry the legal duty to keep it compliant, and that brings a fixed yearly routine. The fund needs financial statements and member statements, an audit, and an SMSF annual return lodged with the ATO. Most Perth trustees hand that routine to an accountant who works with super funds every week.

The ATO requires each fund to be audited every year by an approved SMSF auditor registered with ASIC, who must have no financial interest in the fund and no close ties to its trustees. Trustees should appoint the auditor at least 45 days before the annual return is due, and the audit has to be finished before the return goes in. An audit is still needed in a year with no contributions or payments.

The seven firms below show SMSF work on their own sites, from Northbridge and West Perth to Morley, Osborne Park, Mount Pleasant and Rockingham. Some set up new funds, some focus on annual accounts and administration, and some cover pensions and winding up. Where a firm explains how the audit is arranged we say so; otherwise, ask the firm directly before you transfer your fund.

Common Questions About Perth SMSF Accountants

7Perth SMSF Accountants compared
4.97Average Google rating
What does an SMSF accountant in Perth do each year?

They gather the fund’s bank, investment and contribution records, prepare its financial statements and member statements, and work out the fund’s tax. Once the audit is complete they lodge the SMSF annual return, which also reports member contributions and balances to the ATO. Many also write trustee minutes and help with pensions.

Can the accountant who prepares my SMSF accounts also audit it?

No. The ATO requires the auditor to be an ASIC registered approved SMSF auditor with no close link to the fund, so the person preparing your accounts should not audit them. Many accountants arrange an outside auditor for you. Ask any firm to confirm who will audit your fund before you appoint it.

When is my SMSF annual return due?

A fund lodging for itself is generally due by 31 October after the end of the financial year. Funds on a registered tax agent’s list can often lodge later, usually by 28 February or 15 May, though a new fund’s first return is usually due by 28 February unless the ATO sets an earlier date, and funds with overdue returns may need to meet 31 October. Your accountant can confirm the date for your fund.

What happens if my SMSF return is lodged late?

The ATO can charge penalties, and a fund that misses its due date can have its status on Super Fund Lookup changed to regulation details removed. That can stop employers paying contributions and block rollovers into the fund. Appointing your accountant and auditor early in the year helps avoid this.

Can a Perth accountant tell me whether to start an SMSF?

Only if they hold an Australian financial services licence or act for a licensee, because a recommendation to set up a fund is financial product advice. Without a licence, an accountant can explain the tax and compliance rules and set the fund up once you have decided. Some firms here have a licensed planning arm.

How do I move my SMSF to a different accountant?

Choose your new firm, then authorise it to request the fund’s past financial statements, tax returns, audit reports and BGL or Class data from the old one. Update the ATO with the new tax agent details. Moving straight after a return is lodged keeps the handover simple and avoids paying twice for the same year.
