Choosing an SMSF Accountant in Gold Coast

Plenty of Gold Coast retirees and business owners run their own super through a self-managed fund, and with that control comes a yearly round of paperwork. Each financial year the fund needs its own accounts and member statements, then an audit, then an annual return to the ATO. Most trustees pay an SMSF accountant to keep that cycle moving and to flag problems before they turn into breaches.

The audit is kept apart from the accounting. It has to be carried out by an approved SMSF auditor, registered with ASIC, who has no other role with the fund, and the ATO expects trustees to appoint that auditor at least 45 days before the annual return falls due. The return cannot go in until the audit is complete. We did not include firms whose sites list SMSF audit alongside SMSF accounting.

The eight firms below show SMSF work on their own sites, such as setting up funds, keeping records, preparing annual accounts and returns, and handling pensions. They sit in Southport, Bundall, Robina, Clear Island Waters and Burleigh Waters, and one works with trustees across Australia. Ask each firm how it arranges the audit and what it needs from you at year end before moving your fund.

Common Questions About Gold Coast SMSF Accountants

8Gold Coast SMSF Accountants compared
4.89Average Google rating
What work does an SMSF accountant do each year?

An SMSF accountant keeps the fund’s records, prepares financial statements and member statements, calculates the fund’s tax and lodges its annual return. The accountant also arranges the yearly audit with an outside auditor, keeps track of contributions against the caps and reports events such as pension starts to the ATO. Many also set up new funds.

Can the accountant who prepares my fund’s accounts also audit it?

No. Every SMSF must be audited each year by an approved SMSF auditor registered with ASIC, and the auditor cannot have any other role with the fund, so the firm that prepares your accounts should arrange someone separate. You can look up any auditor on ASIC’s register of approved SMSF auditors before the work begins.

When should I appoint my SMSF auditor?

The ATO asks trustees to appoint an approved auditor no later than 45 days before the fund’s annual return is due. The audit must be finished before the return is lodged. If you have changed accountants or the fund has unusual assets, appoint the auditor early, since gathering valuations and records can take longer than expected.

Can my SMSF buy a Gold Coast apartment?

It can buy residential property only as an investment, if the trust deed and investment strategy allow it and the sole purpose test is met. Members and their relatives cannot live in it or holiday in it, even for a short stay. A fund can buy business premises and lease them to a member’s business at market rent. Speak to a licensed adviser before buying.

Is an SMSF accountant the same as a financial adviser?

No. An SMSF accountant handles the fund’s accounts, tax and compliance. Advice on whether to start an SMSF, or which investments it should hold, is financial product advice and needs an Australian financial services licence. Some firms have a licensed adviser in-house or work with one, so ask what each firm can advise on.

How do I move my SMSF to a new Gold Coast accountant?

Tell the new accountant you want to switch and give them permission to contact your current one. They will usually ask for the last set of financial statements, the audit report, the trust deed, the investment strategy and bank and investment statements. It is easiest to change after a year’s return is lodged, so one firm finishes that year.
