Choosing an SMSF Accountant in Adelaide

A self-managed super fund puts its trustees in charge of the fund’s records, investments and compliance. Each year the fund needs financial statements, member statements, an audit and an SMSF annual return lodged with the ATO. Many Adelaide trustees hand the accounting side to a firm, and the ones below are spread from the CBD and North Adelaide to Kent Town, Myrtle Bank, Newton, Blair Athol and Glenelg.

The audit must be carried out by an approved SMSF auditor who is registered with ASIC and has no ties to the fund that would compromise the audit. The ATO expects trustees to appoint the auditor at least 45 days before the annual return is due, and the return cannot be lodged until the audit is complete. We did not include firms that say they audit funds they also prepare.

Every firm on this list shows SMSF work on its own website, such as establishing a fund, preparing the annual accounts and return, or handling administration and minutes. Several also run financial planning teams, which matters because advice on investments in your fund must come from a licensed adviser. Ask each firm how the audit will be arranged before you move your fund across.

Common Questions About Adelaide SMSF Accountants

8Adelaide SMSF Accountants compared
4.81Average Google rating
Who audits an SMSF in South Australia?

An approved SMSF auditor registered with ASIC, who must not be involved in preparing the fund’s accounts or have other ties that affect their independence as an auditor. Trustees appoint the auditor at least 45 days before the annual return is due. Many Adelaide accountants arrange the audit through an outside auditor for you, so ask how your firm handles it.

When is the SMSF annual return due?

It depends on the fund’s history and whether a registered tax agent lodges it. Funds that lodge themselves generally face a 31 October deadline, while a tax agent’s lodgment program usually allows more time for funds that are up to date. New funds and funds with overdue returns can have earlier dates, so check with your accountant.

Can I move my SMSF to a different Adelaide accountant?

Yes, trustees can change accountants at any time. The new firm will usually ask for the prior year’s financial statements, tax return, audit report and fund documents such as the trust deed, then contact your previous accountant for the working files. Moving between financial years keeps the handover simpler.

Can my SMSF accountant tell me what to invest in?

Only if they hold an Australian financial services licence or work under one, because advice on investments is financial product advice. Accountants can explain tax and compliance rules and help draft the fund’s investment strategy document. Several Adelaide firms on this list have licensed financial planners in house for the advice side.

What records do SMSF trustees have to keep?

Trustees must keep the fund’s accounting records, financial statements and tax returns for at least five years. Minutes of trustee meetings and decisions, records of changes of trustee and signed trustee declarations must be kept for at least ten years, or for as long as you remain a trustee if that is longer. Your accountant will usually keep copies, but the obligation stays with the trustees.

How do I compare SMSF accountants in Adelaide?

Ask what is included each year, such as accounts, the return, minutes and member statements, and how the audit is arranged. Check that the person handling your fund has SMSF experience and that the firm is a registered tax agent. Ask how fees are worked out and how quickly the return is usually lodged.
